Bell lays the foundation of this book on lean enterprise systems and information technology (IT) with a discussion of lean operations, value stream mapping, and production and inventory cycles in part 1. Part 2, "Building Blocks of Information Systems," describes enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and product life cycle management (PLM) software systems. Part 3, "Managing Change with IT," treats event management, performance management, and continuous improvement with IT. Bell acknowledges the issue of whether or not IT by itself has a significant impact on business and weighs in that by using IT to standardize value streams and business processes, an environment for agile development and continuous improvement can be created. Overall, the focus is more on the information flow from the operational processes and less on the technology driving the system; e.g., the topic of relational databases is accorded just a few paragraphs. A substantial amount of detailed information about business and manufacturing processes is presented, and this book would well serve the technology professional lacking that particular knowledge.
